Three Strategies to Self Edit Your Poem, in 250 words
Practical techniques to finish your work.

1: Reverse line read-back
To edit your poem with this strategy, create a fresh file, then place your last line at the top of the page, your second to last line below it, and so on.
Example poem reversal:
I saw a building.
A man was on it.
He was very happy.
Reverse:
He was very happy.
A man was on it.
I saw a building.
Why would we do this? To de-familiarize us with our own writing. In the editing process, we need to destroy our familiarity with our own work so that the errors jump right out.
2: Compost drawer
The simplest, best editing technique: cease all work on the poem, print it or copy it, put it in a drawer, and look at it again three months later. You will have forgotten all about your quibbles and immediately see problems with your own work.
3: Robot Audio Book
Use a text to speech program like Speechify to read your poem out loud to you. Try different genders of voices or accents to hear your root words in different voices. When you hear the robot read your poem, transcribe it by ear. This will force you to engage with your work like a potential reader, and hopefully highlight errors in diction, spelling, or syntax immediately.
